PUWEMA PETI Puwema Peti (Sranang Tongo for ‘source of poetry’) is a 64-page anthology made for the 150 years commemoration of the abolishment of Dutch slavery. After three centuries of slavery, the 1st of July 1863 marked an important change in the course of history for the people in former Dutch colonies Surinam and the Antilles. The aftermath of this common past remains present today, and is expressed by seventeen writers, poets and artists in this book. Puwema Peti was initiated and published by the OBA, the public library of Amsterdam. CONCEPT Vinger.nl was invited to co-curate, design and produce the book. All participating writers approached the subject and expressed their personal relation to it in their own unique forms. This anthology provides multiple perspectives on what freedom and equality is and what it can be and on how these writers’ roots impact their visions on these concepts to this day. DESIGN For this publication we decided on a basic, classic look and feel to carry its contents. In the lay out we left a lot of white space pulling all attention to the words. For headers we went with Futura Std, a geometric font that breathes a modern forwardness. The classy and compact serif Minion Pro made for an excellent typeface that has often been used by publicists and universities before and rightly so! To add an artistic touch to this special publication, we invited visual artist Bert Jacobs to make illustrations that would compliment the stories. His drawing embodies the source of poetry as a brain, that connects to a messed up spinal cord, that slowly entangles throughout the book and in the end, gives a face to the (hi)stories. The warm grey print on the thick and furry off white paper and the black on black cover bring a soft feel to the design.
PRESENTATION The poetry bundle was presented in the form of a public reading / performance of all participating writers in 2013. We produced several spin off designs for the launch of this book, like posters, ads and invitations for print and web.
